Under the Friday night lights of the Basilone Field, the Bridgewater-Raritan High School football team earned a major triumph, grinding out a hard-fought 7-3 victory over Ridge High School on September 18.
This victory pushed their record to 3-1 on the season, building off of two early-season victories in their opening games against Woodbridge High School and Hillsborough High School. The Panthers delivered a clutch, defense-dominated showdown to break an 11-year losing streak against Ridge.
Ideal weather set the stage for the long and gritty game as a clear blue sky filled with pillowy clouds hung over the field on an 82-degree evening. As a fire truck from Green Volunteer Fire Company waved the American flag above the field, the Panthers stormed the field.
Friday’s game was not a high-scoring shootout with picture-perfect tosses and catches; rather, both offenses were shut down on both sides of the field.
The first quarter was completely scoreless, as both defenses met rush attempts with immediate stops, and passes were broken up or intercepted. The scoring deadlock finally broke in the second quarter when senior running back Jahmier Black delivered an explosive run, fighting off defenders with two stiff arms and a spin move to cap a touchdown run, sending the Panthers into halftime with a 7-0 lead
Ridge threatened to answer in the second half, but back-to-back holding penalties took away potential scoring opportunities for touchdowns in the third quarter, keeping momentum on Bridgewater-Raritan’s side.
The victory was a full team effort, but there were individuals who helped anchor Bridgewater-Raritan’s game plan. On defense, junior safety Jack Winne gave a dominant performance, recording multiple interceptions, including a clutch fourth-quarter pick to stop any chance of a Ridge comeback. Offensively, Black provided the exact spark the Panthers needed with his game-defining second-quarter touchdown.
The Panthers’ game plan was clear from the start. They cut down Ridge's run game and opened up their own passing game. The Bridgewater-Raritan corners cut the passing game down to a minimum, leaving no room for completions. On offense, the Panthers leaned on the run game for four quarters and eventually won.
Bridgewater-Raritan will seek to improve to 4-1 when it faces Westfield High School on Saturday, September 26, in Westfield.
