BRHS student council at CNJ

The Student Council at Bridgewater-Raritan High School joined their peers at the New Jersey Association of Student Councils Leadership Conference at The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, October 6.

At this conference, the first that Bridgewater-Raritan has attended this school year, members of the leadership roles from various schools across the state gathered to share ideas on best practices for the school community.

Michele Mammone and Sarah Cleary, the Co-Advisors of the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Student Council, reported on this informative day held on the college campus in Ewing.

There was a featured speaker, Erin Pompa, who gave an incredible presentation on overcoming fear and redefining societal standards. Pompa enhanced the morale and motivation of these student leaders through intense exercises and inspiring stories that she learned from and the other people could relate to.

One such exercise was identifying a “problem” in our lives and realizing that it is simply a single black dot. By shifting our point of view to the large, blank space surrounding this dot, we can recognize and appreciate how much good we have in our lives and how much we can be grateful for.

Following this speaker, the conference continued with breakout sessions, during which various schools shared activities and events they had planned to boost school spirit. Our student council members listened to many different schools and took notes on events we could use for inspiration.

In the main gym, NJASC’s state charity, Books for Smiles, a non-profit organization located in Cherry Hill, presented on the various ways they acquire children’s books for children living in less fortunate communities. They also showed data indicating a direct correlation between the town's wealth, the number of books available to children, and their standardized test scores or reading levels.

The Bridgewater-Raritan High School Student Council makes a donation to the State Charity every year.
