High school Class of 2024 graduation scheduled for Rutgers

High school Class of 2024 graduation scheduled for Rutgers

Rutgers University will serve as the host when the students from the Class of 2024 at Bridgewater-Raritan High School receive their diplomas this June.

The Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District Board of Education unanimously approved the decision to hold the Class of 2024 commencement exercise at Rutgers University’s Jersey Mike’s Arena—commonly referred to as the RAC–in Piscataway on Wednesday, June 19.

The Board of Education voted on this action during its regular public meeting that was held Tuesday evening, February 13, at the Wade Administration Building.

The move to stage the graduation ceremony to Rutgers is the result of the major renovations that will be ongoing at Basilone Memorial Field, which has served as the venue for the high school’s commencement.

Superintendent Bob Beers reported during the Board of Education meeting that Jersey Mike’s Arena can accommodate 6,000 guests to the ceremony.

“It offers climate control and handicap access and is big enough to fit everyone,’’ Superintendent Beers said.

The decision also followed advocacy from both students and the community in regards to a larger venue to serve as the graduation site.

The price for tickets that will be sold and the amount that each family is allowed will be decided by the school district and high school administrators. Also, a revised final exam schedule will also be determined.

Superintendent Beers also shared that the date of June 19 is one day earlier than the date that was originally scheduled for high school graduation. That shift from Thursday, June 20, was due to the fact that Rutgers is holding two other high school graduation ceremonies on that day.

Also, since the graduation day is earlier than originally scheduled, a revised final exam schedule will also be determined.

Last June, the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Class of 2023 graduation ceremony was held inside the school’s Vaughn Stapleton Gymnasium due to rain. That move resulted in a limited number of guests who were allowed to attend the ceremony.

June 19 will also be the day that the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School will hold its commencement exercise. But Superintendent Beers said that the high school’s ceremony at Rutgers will be held at 1 p.m., which would allow time for the guests to arrive back to attend the middle school ceremony later that day at Vaughn Stapleton Gymnasium.
