Normangee Independent School District - Internet Safety

Internet & Cell Phone Safety

There is no doubt that the internet is a powerful resource for learning, research and communication.  Your child can access the entire world at the touch of his/her fingertips!  However, it is important to be aware of what your children are viewing on the internet, who they talk to and what they share about themselves online.  Please talk to your children about this safety issue.

Some online safety tips to share for your children are as follows:

  • Set up rules for computer use with your children.  Discuss these rules with them and make sure they understand.

  • Have your child use a kid-friendly search engine and consider using filtering, blocking and monitoring software.

  • Talk to your child about the dangers of email and chatting with people they do not know.  Teach your child to never give out personal information and to never agree to meet anyone.

  • Keep the computer in a common area, where you can watch and monitor your child.

For more tips, please view the Parents Guide to Social Media at the following link:

Similarly, cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Help your child to be safe while using their phones.

  • Establish rules for when they are allowed to use their cellphones, what websites they can visit and what apps they can download.

  • Understand an app’s purpose before your child downloads it. Who are the users? What type of privacy settings are available?

  • Remind your children that anything they send from their phones can be easily forwarded and shared.

  • Talk to your child about the possible consequences of sending inappropriate images or text messages.

  • When shopping for a cellphone for your child, research the security settings that are available.
