Update on COVID-19 - School Closing/Distance Learning - 3/12/2020

Families and Students of BRRSD,

Our first priority continues to be the health and well-being of our students, teachers, and staff members. As you know, we have been proactively preparing to continue delivery of instruction through distance learning since the NJDOE indicated, last week, that if we have a plan in place for consistent home instructional services while closed, such days would count toward our 180-day requirement.

Public health officials continue to advise that social distancing is the most effective strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We recognize that school closures will create challenges for our families and our community, but we also recognize our responsibility to address this public health concern.

Schools are already closed tomorrow, Friday, March 13, for students and teaching staff, but in an effort to meet our responsibility, we will be closing our buildings and implementing a distance learning plan effective Monday, March 16, 2020 through Friday, March 27, 2020. All field trips, school events, and activities are also postponed, effective Monday, March 16, 2020.

Families and students will receive more information on our distance learning program over the coming days. Our program includes supporting families with technology needs as well as maintaining programs including free and reduced lunch and special services. The program will begin for students on Monday, March 16, 2020.

Please note that students, family members, and community members will not be permitted in any school building until further notice.

It is possible that action from the NJDOE or the governor may supersede us at some point. We are choosing to act immediately and will adjust plans if necessary.

We appreciate your support and understanding of this decision. We will continue to maintain regular communication with our local public health official and with our learning community during the school closure. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe.

Thank you.
