2020-2021 Board Goals
The Board of Education is critical to the success of any community. Focused on student achievement, a Board focuses on Vision, Accountability, Policy, Community Leadership, and Relationships (National School Boards Associations). While these areas of focus encompass a wide variety of tasks required of a Board, but its overarching function is to ensure, through oversight and maintenance of policy, that a district is well run. To ensure that a district does not become complacent, a Board of Education provides constant vigilance to ensure that the district, from a global perspective, is always growing, always maximizing its impact for students and through students, the larger community.
While the focus of the Board is relatively unchanging, the specific outcomes needed from one year to the next must focus on the immediate needs. This is not to say that the Board is not constantly overseeing the operations of the district. Rather, goals are statements of short-term outcomes that are in line with the long-term focus a Board seeks to achieve.
For this reason, the Bridgewater-Raritan Board of Education has set the following goals for the 2020-2021 school year:
- model lifelong learning by engaging in activities that constantly enhance boardsmanship.
- Actions will include a mixture of the following across the entire Board, with members determining which actions are most beneficial to them as individuals and to the Board as a whole:
- attendance at NJSBA events, including but not limited to the fall convention, to promote learning and certification
- attendance at state-level events that allow for interaction with other stakeholders
- engage in book/article study on identified topics/themes
- engage in online learning connected to identified topics/themes
- Actions will include a mixture of the following across the entire Board, with members determining which actions are most beneficial to them as individuals and to the Board as a whole:
- ensure the implementation of the district’s comprehensive strategic plan.
- Actions will include:
- assignment and participation of members as Board liaisons to each of the six Action Teams within the plan
- requiring and providing guidance for the development of Year One goals in line with the established 5-Year Goals in the plan
- requiring and providing regular updates on the progress of each Action Team toward its Year One goal by each liaison as necessary
- requiring an end-of-year, public presentation of Year One work including a summary of accomplishments and a recommendation of Year Two Goals
- Actions will include:
- ensure an effective committee structure.
- Actions will include:
- the development of monthly templates for each standing committee to ensure the regular operations of the full Board as based on the committee structure
- the development of a committee-specific goal for each standing committee for the 2020-2021 school year
